Mine site closure: addressing the environmental challenges

WABSI has helped enable a new project to develop site‐specific completion criteria for projects that require mine site rehabilitation.

The W.A. Completion Criteria and Risk Based Monitoring Project will deliver an independent science review and framework that will be informed by industry consultation, leading research scientists and practitioners.

The project will analyse state, national and international rehabilitation research and provide a scientific basis for government policy and future research. It will also inform and assist industry to develop rehabilitation actions for mine closure plans and associated monitoring for W.A. mine site closure and relinquishment.

WABSI facilitated the development and collaboration of two governance groups: the Research Steering Committee and the Industry Advisory Group. The former provides advice on key decisions regarding the scope of the project and governance to the project team. The Industry Advisory Group provides advice and feedback to the Research Steering Committee, regarding end user industry requirements, expectations and knowledge that will support the delivery of the project.

WABSI developed the project in partnership with key Western Australian government regulators, mining industry and research providers. The project will be delivered by the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions, Curtin University, Murdoch University, Edith Cowan University and the University of Western Australia.
