Celebrating National Science Week: A plain language guide to understanding how biodiversity science works

It’s National Science Week 2026, and we’re marking it by asking some of nature’s biggest questions.

Today we’re launching Nature’s Big Questions, a free, accessible guide from The Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute (WABSI) that explains how biodiversity science works, why it matters, and how it helps government, industry, communities and conservation organisations make better decisions for WA’s environment.

This resource is for anyone curious about science and its role in shaping a more sustainable future for Western Australia, from students and educators to policymakers and industry.

WA is home to some of the most unique biodiversity on Earth, including eight of Australia’s 15 biodiversity hotspots. Understanding it, protecting it and restoring it starts with good science.

Inside the guide, we tackle questions like:

  • Why does biodiversity science need to be independent?
  • How is new technology, like AI and satellite imagery, driving solutions for nature?
  • How does research actually translate into real-world environmental decisions?
