20th March marked the first ever World Rewilding Day; an initiative linked to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Global Charter for Rewilding the Earth. The Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute (WABSI) speaks with the Co-Chairs of IUCN’s CEM Rewilding Thematic Group as they outline a radical, optimistic vision for conservation and consider how we might take a more bold approach to restoration in Western Australia.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM), is a co-signatory to the World Rewilding Day initiative, promoting ecosystem-based approaches for the management of landscapes and seascapes to address global challenges. IUCN comprises government, civil society organisations and harnesses the experience of experts from more than 160 countries, making it the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it.
