February to March is Bunuru, the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. It is known as the Season of Adolescence, or the Second Summer, where many white flowering gums bloom. These include wandoo or wornt (Eucalyptus wandoo) and marri (Corymbia calophylla).
Seed cones change from green to bright red, which indicates that they are ripening. This makes them more attractive to animals, especially the emu, that will eat the fleshy outer layer.
The Noongar six seasons calendar, which shows Bunuru, guides us to observe changes in nature and build respect for Country. It helps enable a better understanding of plants and animals for biodiversity conservation.
